"I remember the temptation of validation is always more exciting than solid incremental progress." Beautifully said, Kara. Thank you for writing this story.
Ah, the tension between being aware and informed/not missing opportunities and going down the rabbit hole of distraction is one of my issues. Kudos for staying on your own path! Speaking of mouses, did you see this story: https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/01/08/mouse-cleaning-shed-wales/ ??
What a huge win, bringing yourself back to center. That is some serious progress amore. "the temptation of validation is always more exciting than solid incremental progress" i am screaming at the truth of this.
What is it about this one that’s making me feel weird? I think it’s, first of all seeing that I’ve been procrastinating on my rewrites because I feel like it still won’t be good enough, it’s more exciting to think about the next thing. And secondly acknowledging “the temptation of validation is always more exciting than solid incremental progress.” No one is seeing my struggle here. And even if they do, they just think, Diane is still writing … the same thing she’s been doing since 2015. Still writing. Still not getting anywhere. But that’s not exactly true. I’m going somewhere but it’s going to take as long as it takes. I need to remember to “keep writing.”
I also have a challenging time with rewrites and chipping away. But maybe something to remember is any shiny new thing will also require rewrites and chipping eventually...and we might as well finish the original project first!

We will fight it, though! And we will win.

"Still writing" is something to celebrate!

This is SO relatable!!!!
And I guess a reason why it’s so important for US to celebrate our small progresses as well as the large showy ones.
I just made a post it for my desk that says
SOLID
INCREMENTAL
PROGRESS
thank you!!
Showed it to several friends on Zoom. We realized the acronym is SIP!!!!
Sip at your project! Just for 10 mins a day, have a sip!!!!
AHHH. PERFECT!
Lol- you’re right!
