Oh, hi friends!
I love when friends tell me about their processes in progress…
They’re combing through scripts. Or sending novel revisions to their editor. Or changing their story’s point-of-view from third-person to first-person. Or debating between two names for their newsletter. Or relaunching their website.
And then there are the more ephemeral, liminal spaces.
Deciding if grad school is the right next step. Considering where and when to move. Or whether to commit (to the race, gig, relationship, etc).
Processes come in all shapes.
Right now composer Kris and I are working on our musical Marathon, and doing something we’ve never done. We’re holding a reading in a couple of weeks to see where we are, and where we’re going. No audience, no grand plan beyond gathering and working through and making it better.
And you know what we keep telling each other?
This is fun.
Beginnings can be challenging, but also exciting.
And the point isn’t perfection, but progress. That’s it.
So this harder than it looks, for sure. (You haven’t lived until you’ve combed through every rhyme for “see” 65 times.)
But this is why we do things we’ve never done before.
To go places we’ve never been.
So consider your concrete spaces and your liminal spaces.
Consider what progress looks like for you.
One step at a time.
Here, here for progress! Nothing happens without it. And if you can enjoy the process and have "fun," that's icing on the cake.
The other day I needed a talking to. I was feeling overwhelmed and slightly anxious about the many projects and commitments I said "yes" to. Could I get them done? Could I do them calmly, intentionally, while enjoying the process?
I said, "Linda, you always make your deadlines. What are you worrying about? And if you keep worrying, you won't enjoy the process. You have the time you need to do the things you are committed to doing. So cut it out. You've got this. Enjoy the process and the progress!"
"this is fun" is a GREAT mantra. Thank you.
