Seed planting is a beautiful way to be in the world. The actions can take many forms, and you never know which will bloom. But that's OK. With planting comes nurturing. That's the part I enjoy most.
When I care for my mini-garden, I help the flowers and herbs flourish. When I give love and attention to my relationships and projects, the fruit is abundant.
My motivation is not for the result (the fruit), although who doesn't love delicious fruit? For me, it's more about the actions put forth with love, mindfulness, and presence that bring me joy.
I just love your framing of giving "attention" to your relationships and projects, it feels so apt! I so admire your ability to be in — and enjoy — the moment.
Kara, After reading your newsletter today, I think it’s a good time to tell you that I’ve finished reading Matt Bell’s Refuse to Be Done. Thank you for recommending it because it is one of the best writing books I’ve read. I learned about “widows and orphans”; habit of reading aloud; and change of point of view. Bell is dedicated to his craft.
I'm so thrilled you enjoyed it, Margaret! I found so much to admire and learn from in his book and think of it often. Looking forward to hearing what fruit might come from reading this book!
Thank you so much for this reminder, Kara. I always love your newsletter, and the timing of this one was perfect. I'm in the beginning stages of launching my own business, and I can feel the anxiety creep up about not being a fully functioning business with a full roster (meanwhile I haven't even launched my website). Today, I can reach out, plant seeds, and make connections -- and that process is as important as the result. Thank you!!
Thank you so much for being here, Melanie. And congratulations on the launch! What an exciting time. I know all-too-well that "jump to the end of the alphabet" feeling and worrying about twists far down the road, but it sounds like you're tilling the soil and laying the right foundation, one seed at a time. (How many metaphors can I fit in here?) I hope you find ways to enjoy the process and admire the work you're putting in, day by day. That's everything, as you say. Cheering you on, and let me know if there's anything I can do to help!

Thanks for the reminder. About to plant a seed right now ... so I can eat the fruit sooner than later. Berries are in season right now and so so good!
Hooray! Keep me posted on the fruit, Nancy!
Really needed to hear this right now, thank you! 🩷
So glad to hear this! You're so welcome!
Thank you for this reminder! Happy planting — and happy 4th!
You are a queen of planting seeds! Happy 4th!!
