Oh, hi friends!
Yesterday I took a little nap in the middle of the day.
Or, I should say, a nap took me.
I was trying to untangle a knotty little piece of the musical I'm writing, specifically about structure, and point-of-view, and how to get in and out of certain conversational exchanges — anyway, let's just say it was more of a fresh morning-brain activity than a post-lunch-brain activity.
But there I was, post-lunch, trying to think.
So then I fell asleep. No alarm set, not a planned "caffeine nap." I just kept thinking about the knot until I fell asleep, and when I was asleep I must have continued to think, because when I woke up a half hour later, the tangle was untangled, and I had a new length of rope to follow.
Sometimes we need to wrestle and fight our ideas, to pull and yank until they show us something new.
But often, we need ease. Permission to expand and think and sleep until a pathway loosens up.
Are you in a wrestling mood today?
Or are you one nap — or walk, or daydream, or doodle — away from an answer?
Both can work.
Ask yourself: Which is right for now?
I've always been a fan of afternoon naps, or whenever one is needed. They don't always work as problem solvers for me, but they can be so refreshing! My favorite ones occur in the presence of cats.
