Oh, hi friends!
One is not all.
I was thinking about this yesterday, and how one experience can often define or dictate how we think about an entire…industry, or type of job, or project.
We have a single experience — maybe a bad one.
The nasty boss. The job where you worked ’til 2 a.m. The difficult collaboration.
And something happens.
We think that’s how it is everywhere.
That’s how it always is.
I’ve been guilty of this. I thought all magazines or websites were run like Newsweek and The Daily Beast (turns out, no). I thought all freelance writing was created equal (also, no). I thought book publishing happened a certain way and on and on…
I would say this is just a ‘me’ thing, but I’ve also seen people avoid huge opportunities or changes because they believed every job, or gig, or schedule was going to mirror one they had in the past.
But is that really true?
One is not all.
Sometimes we owe it to ourselves to investigate, to try again in a new space — and find out for sure.
Are You Still Thinking Over Your Idea?
My Launch the Plane sessions have continued to be invigorating and propulsive hours with people doing the most interesting work.
We plot newsletter strategy! We refine book proposals! We talk short story collections! We refine podcast ideas!
To start, I send you curated questions to get you thinking deeply about your project and what you want next, then we have an hourlong session to work on steps, creative blocks, and moving forward.
Then you launch your plane.
I have new summer hours for August only — book a session directly here, or respond to this email and let me know what’s on your mind.
Go get ‘em.
I had a co-working time with a gal yesterday and she said the most interesting thing: Both things can be true. You know when you've heard something before but this time it just takes hold of your brain. That was one of those times. After reading your post, both statements are sticking with me: One is not all and Both things can be true. Interesting how we (sorry for the lump-together; well, sorry, not sorry) see things one way or the other rather than one way and another. Cheers.
Ohhhhh you know where I am going to use “one is not all”? When I don’t nail a workshop or talk. It happened recently — well, actually, I thought I DID mail it in the room but then was given meh feedback, and it’s been crushing me a bit. Thanks for the reminder! One is not all!
