Hi Kara - it's me - back from two weeks in South Korea. This is the first newsletter waiting for me and I could not not send a comment.
"Acclimating is tough, isn’t it?" YES. It is very, very tough.
Thank you for the advice to "balance the urgent against the important." Coming back is overwhelming, and I wasn't quite sure why. But, as you said, I'm not the same person I was when I left; I have changed.
Such an adventure! I'm also acclimating after a week away, and wow -- why does the world feel upside down?! I have faith though that we will carve out a new nook for our new selves.
Bringing me joy (and perhaps some sadness and introspection) this week:
TV: The return of Pachinko (season 2) and Slow Horses (season 4) on Apple+. Two of the best shows currently airing!
Music: I'm a digital music hoarder and love making playlists and collecting albums (you wouldn't believe the different versions of albums and their mastering, some of which are laughably bad but is the only version currently available on streaming). Long-winded preamble aside, this week I have been compiling 60s-80s Reggae albums. Album recommendation: Marcia Griffiths - Naturally (https://album.link/s/5eVn4uEttNUmF5TeJkkaEW)
Home: My family is gearing up to finally move into our house next month after over a year of searching. We uncovered beautiful terrazzo floors that were under years of cheap wood planks and carpet. We had them refinished and seeing them shine again has been a victory after a difficult year!
Wow!! I love this eclectic mix -- that's exactly what weeks usually feel like. Congrats on the big move and the terrazzo floors, that reveal sounds like a TikTok I'd be obsessed with rewatching. A little hard work that'll pay off for years...
And thanks for the Marcia Griffiths link, listening to "Dreamland" right now, it's the vibe I didn't know I needed.
I love how you title your Friday entries as "A gentle close to the week." It's such a gracious way to wrap up the work week and glide into the weekend. I'm psyched because tonight we're going to see one of our favorite comedians, Kathleen Madigan. I can't think of a better way than to laugh our way into the weekend.
Thank you so much for adding your wisdom to the "Reasons to Ask for Help" post. I love what you said about reframing when you're stuck. Instead of asking "How do I do this?", you ask, "Who can help me do this?" Such a powerful perspective shift. I always appreciate the way you think and express yourself. Thank you, wonderful Kara.
Thanks for the sweet mention of The Uplifters. Those women’s stories supplement all the courage capital I raise spending time with YOU! And that quote at the end of this newsletter?!? What an energy drain to worry about whether work is good. So much more of a boost to simply focus on the doing and the improving! Onward!
Doing a Happy Dance because your emails are back in my inbox - Truly! I look forward to them. Thank You xx
Awww, thank you!!!

I respect your ideas a lot, Kara—but I still hate horror movies.
I was exactly like you, Doug!!! Still shocked that I enjoy them so much now.
Then maybe I'll give one a whirl...
Two suggestions: "Barbarian" is laced with humor, and "The Babadook" is scary with big themes!
I'll look for them. Are they on Netflix or another streamer?
Thanks, Kara. Warmest,
Doug

"Laughing into the weekend" is now how I want to end every Friday! Hope you had a great time, and the joy is continuing! Big hugs.
Go for it, Kara!
We had a fantastic time! Lots of laughing and also enjoyed a yummy BBQ dinner at a local spot.
Happy weekend! Big hugs to you, too.
