Um, how is it 4:30 in the morning
Oh, hi friends!
I’m writing this at 4am because we’re wrapping up tomorrow’s big Maisel Musical project.
I should be tired but am not, not really? (That 10pm coffee might have something to do with it.)
But I’m also reminded of the pure, frantic energy that comes from being so deep in the work that hours pass. I miss that. It’s how we stayed up until 2am perfecting pages at Newsweek while the trucks were waiting to get the final proofs. It’s how a photographer gets lost for hours looking at thousands of moments they brought to life. Or how I imagine an ER nurse navigates a night shift, moving from one patient to another. Or how a computer engineer feels when she’s knee-deep in code.
You exchange hours of your life for the belief that those hours were not wasted.
That’s it, that’s the whole deal. We could try to do that more often, couldn’t we? Wouldn’t that be something.
I love to share this tweet because it got a cute 12 likes but felt incredibly important then, as it does now. Turns out that tweeting something and then adding “This tweet is important for posterity” actually makes it come true?
So please go and declare yourselves and your intentions, if not on Twitter then somewhere, an email, on Instagram, that scrap of paper on your desk you swore you threw away three days ago. Say it, whatever it may be.
What’s the Best Thing You’ve Read Lately?
My creative inputs have felt a little stale and rigid, and I’d like to know what you’ve read lately that you’ve loved and/or that made you go “Yes! this was what I needed!” Book, play, article, whatever — I want to hear it! Please shoot me the name or link if you have a moment. I’ll share a list of the suggestions in an upcoming newsletter. This educated frog thanks you in advance.
Do you like these daily emails? Please share with a friend!
Thanks, as always, for reading.
Love, Kara
