Why are you holding back
Oh, hi friends!
When you try new things, everything goes wrong.
OK, not everything. But many things!
Things that you’re not quite equipped to deal with yet.
One example: I’m launching a little podcast (more soon) and last night I spent three hours editing an interview.
It was done.
It was perfect.
Until it wasn’t.
Suddenly, the tracks were misaligned and all my cuts were choppy. The transcript was a mess.
So I was surly the rest of the night, sighing into my green curry while watching The Wire. All that wasted time.
Today I opened the editor again.
Two choices: Get frustrated trying to fix it, or just edit the episode again.
But I don’t have to waste any more time beating myself up for not knowing how to do everything perfectly yet.
And now I know what not to do next time.
Things go wrong.
But you can fix them.
“Why are you stingy with yourselves? Why are you holding back? What are you saving for—for another time? There are no other times. There is only now. Right now.”
— George Balanchine
A Different Kind of Gosling
Sooo, today I reveal I’m of the generation of people who saw The Notebook in theaters three times. Ryan Gosling! Gena Rowlands! So many tears!
Now they’re making it into a Broadway-bound musical, with a tryout in Chicago opening in September. Ingrid Michaelson (who I also saw in concert many times in college), is doing music and lyrics, and Bekah Brunstetter, one of my favorite playwrights, wrote the book.
Just wanted to share the first song, “If This Is Love,” in case you are also of The Notebook generation.
