Oh, hi friends!
I was hedging about applying for something this weekend. Back and forth, back and forth. A little burnt out from rejection, a little tired of writing artistic statements.
Finally, I came back to that old question: Would this opportunity expand me or diminish me?
Well then.
So I gathered my stuff (of course, it didn’t take as long as I thought it would) and sent it off.
Even hitting “submit” felt expansive.
How can you expand this week?
“The number one thing that I always feel is my job to do as the director on a project, whether it be a big project or a small project, is to make everybody in the room feel safe, that they can bring their best work.”
I met Tyrone earlier this year when he directed my musical Letters From May written with Kris Bjarke (Kris, incidentally, wrote the intro music for my podcast!).
Here we all are after the show, Tyrone on the left, me on the right, glorious cast all around.
In the first five minutes of meeting Tyrone, even over Zoom, I immediately knew three things:
1) This man loves his work and brings joy to his work.
2) This man excels at his work.
3) I can learn a lot from watching how this man works.
As you can tell, I’m a big fan!
So I called him up, and here is today’s podcast with Tyrone L. Robinson — actor, writer, composer, director, and — no surprise here — guy with a great podcast voice! Loved chatting with him about making theater more inclusive, how to approach your first drafts, and much more. Hope you might learn something from being around him for a few minutes, too.
