Oh, hi!
What is one habit you wanted to adopt this summer that you haven’t yet?
What is one habit you wanted to drop this summer that you still have?
Will today be different?
You’ve got time.
“I’ve just felt that the pieces that have had the most impact and that I'm the most proud of are the ones where I felt like I was kind of voicing something that needed to be voiced and hadn't been voiced so loudly yet.”
Freelance writers are always on the lookout for assignments — and most assignments revolve around what’s newsy or trendy.
It’s much harder and more time-consuming to write about something before it’s new (usually making news yourself).
That’s one of the skills I admire most in my friend Danielle Friedman.
She’s always writing stories that are deeper and less obvious, even if they’re more challenging to write.
Her perspective can apply to other industries or practices, too.
You can ask yourself: What’s the easy angle?
Or, if you’re looking to make an impact, or to feel proud about your work, you can ask: How can I give a voice to something new?
We get into this in my latest podcast chat with Danielle. We also talk about conducting rapid-fire interviews, writing pitches that editors want to read, and three types of story scoops she learned about from our former boss (shoutout to Edward Felsenthal).
Hope you enjoy this as much as I did.
