Where can you be found?
I attended a Maestra workshop with musical theater director Sammi Cannold yesterday and she mentioned it’s sometimes difficult to find certain people. Literally, writers, actors, designers she wants to work with — they are elusive.
You need a website, is what I’m saying.
It doesn’t have to be fancy. It doesn’t have to be an exhaustive list of your every accomplishment.
But it has to be a little something.
When you want to be found by others — for work, opportunities, connections — you can’t hide.
I’m sorry, but it’s true!
I helped a friend write copy for her site a few months ago. She’s very accomplished and had plenty of work to include, but hated the “self-promotional” feeling of writing a bio or talking about herself in the third person.
But people want to work with you, I said. Allow them to find you.
(Maybe your people don’t care about a shiny website, but wherever the opportunities specific to you are — LinkedIn, job boards, YouTube, in-person meetups, New Play Exchange — that’s where you should be, too. Sharing, connecting, making yourself known.)
Please don’t hide your talent because you’re too scared to declare it.
Claim it, write it down, put it out there.
And see what happens.
Shoutouts to Friends of Brass Ring Daily Doing Big Things
My favorite read of the week was this NYT profile of Martinus Evans, founder of the Slow AF Run Club, written by Danielle Friedman! Loved his inspiring story and the care and encouragement running through this story. (Btw, Danielle was an early guest on my podcast, where she talked about how she interviews sources and pitches stories editors want to read.)
My favorite comedian James Hamilton is recording his debut stand-up album on June 16 at Union Hall in Brooklyn! Grab tickets here. And/or follow him on Instagram @thejamham. He’s the real real deal.
My favorite self talk-shifter Katie Horwitch is getting ready for her first book, Want Your Self, to be published on October 3! It’s available for pre-order now — I’ve read it (twice) and love it so much. (Katie also chatted with me on the podcast back in August when she was submitting her manuscript! Wow. Time flew.)
These stories remind me of the long game (shoutout to upcoming podcast guest Dorie Clark).
They remind me of the patience required to build meaningful work and share it with others.
I love seeing them succeed.
To them — and to you — have a gentle close to the week.
See you on Monday.
PS — I’m holding two more Launch the Plane sessions today with folks making big life and career moves. This has quickly become my favorite part of the week. If you’re interested, more info here or hit reply and tell me what you’d like help launching this summer!
Thanks for the reminder Kara. xx
I feel so special being in the newsletter. Thank you so, so much for sharing! You know how much I love BRD so this is pretty up-there for me when it comes to mentions 😊
And….you read it twice?!? I don’t think I knew this. I’m so honored. You came in as superwoman in those final days and made this book 100000xs better.
Happy Gentle Close Friday, Kara!
