Oh, hi friends!
We're here. Here we are.
How are you?
I was thinking yesterday about "reentry," and how we transition back to our routines after time away. Vacations, sabbaticals, maternity leave, even something as short as holiday weekends.
And it's all about expectations, isn't it?
If we expect to come back and do everything exactly the same way as before we…usually do not. And then we get frustrated that we're not back at it.
Where did it all (momentum, direction, ability) go?!
But maybe our expectations can shift.
Maybe the aim isn't to be back at it, but to recognize that this — where we are now, today — this *is* it.
No comparison to before, no longing for yesterday.
New expectations.
This is your day.
Your canvas.
You can paint whatever you want.
Start fresh.
Do You Have a Script for Saying "No"?
Samantha Massell does! And oh, it’s a good one.
Sam is an actor, singer, and writer, and today is actually a big day. She's starring as researcher Rosalind Franklin in the world premiere of the new musical Double Helix, written by Madeline Myers and opening at the Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor — and tonight is the first performance!! (See more on the show in this weekend's New York Times, and tickets here.)
We chatted about the four-year journey of the show, exactly how she says "no" to what doesn't serve her, treating her creative projects like they're non-negotiable (this is genius!), and how plant-tending and word puzzles create the structure of her day.
All that in 20 minutes?! (I'm a fanatical editor.)

I just love watching people get to realize their dreams.
PS — Got a big idea? Let’s launch the plane.
Love this Kara! Once again you popped into my inbox with just the thing I need. I’m back in corporate on a contract today so definitely feeling the re-entry.
