Oh, hi friends!
Alright, here’s a question I’ve been thinking about since January.
I met the writer Jenny Blake earlier this year and immediately, like, later that night, bought her book Free Time.
The subtitle is “lose the busywork, love your business.”
This is what I call Kara catnip.
I’ve read hundreds of nonfiction business books. Self-help books. Mindset books. Strategy books.
Yet I took six pages of handwritten notes while reading this book — it illuminated so many ways my “systems” for creative work, creative services work, and regular life admin could be improved.
I revamped my website, put a bunch of stuff I regularly ordered on autoship, created invoice templates, cleaned up my desktop, and tweaked dozens of other little practices that were creating friction in my daily life.
But one larger, existential question I’ve thought about nonstop is this one, attributed to Jerry Colonna.
“How am I complicit in creating the conditions I say I don't want?”
Whew!!!
Let’s just say this hit home, and every time I’ve been in a rut or bed rot since, I’ve thought about it…
The crucial word, for me, is “complicit” — it’s not a nice word, per se, but it’s effective.
It made me think about where I was “going with the flow” or a little complacent with my effort.
Realizing that we can change our conditions — through subtle changes, or even just acknowledgement — that’s a gift, too.
Thanks, as always, for being here.
Love, Kara
ooof, feeling both called out and called in, haha.
Ordering her book now. Thank you for the recommendation. It looks like it's "catnip" for me, too. :)
