Oh, hi friends!
Who is your idol? I wish I could show you their first draft. Or their first self-tape. Their first business proposal.
Would you notice all the flaws? I’m sure you would. They noticed, too. You’d both see the dinged-up, crummy version. All unfinished thoughts and soft ideas. Pure effort, no polish. It would not be pretty. The opposite of beautiful. Unfulfilled big ideas. Dots that never connect. There are typos, too. Lots of typos. It’s amazing how many typos exist in a first draft.
But I have a feeling you would love it. Not because you knew it came from your idol. Not because it makes you feel better about your own effort this week. But because it is proof, proof that nothing ever comes out perfect the first time, no matter who you are. And you will decide to, maybe, turn back to your own first draft today, hopeful that your second, third, and fourth drafts will be born with small improvements, lightly buffed of their imperfections.
And maybe one day someone will ask to see your first draft, and you will place it in their hands.
Look, you’ll say, This was my beginning.
PS — Quotes and recommendations will return soon; I’ve been trying to chill on my ‘inputs’ while I work on some ‘outputs.’ I’ll be refilling the well this weekend! Have a good one yourself, my friends.
