Oh, hi friends!
Instagram can be good.
I recently read this post from Ina Garten reflecting on her path.
Forty-five years ago today, I left my job working on nuclear energy policy in Washington and bought this tiny 400-square foot store in a town I'd never been to — Westhampton Beach, New York. At the end of the first day, we had $87 in the register (before expenses!) and Jeffrey said sadly, "I don't think you'll make it here." I think he was really hoping I'd come to my senses and move back to Washington with him. Happily, Friday of Memorial Day weekend was a whole other story. Life is all about taking a chance and figuring it out along the way…
So much goodness here. Breaking it down:
The Leap
She left her job — an entirely different career — and gravitated towards a new home and industry. Big scare.
The Friction
Imagine the doubt. You take the leap, commit the time, open the store, and then ask…how on earth will this be sustainable?
The Back-up Plan
When faced with friction, it’s natural to start dreaming of safer paths. Why not move to D.C.? Close it up? Return to the cozy?
The Persistence
But of course, to get somewhere you’ve never been, you have to do things you’ve never done.
I just love her story. It feels so immediate and fresh, even though it was 45 years ago.
You figure it out along the way.
Don’t give up.
PS — If you’re pulling an Ina and trying to figure out next steps with your project, my Launch the Plane sessions are taking off this month! Carve out some time to move forward.
And if they’re not right for you at the moment, but you still need some encouragement, hit reply and tell me about your big leap!!! I’d love to know what’s next for you.
Have a relaxing and inspiring weekend, friends!
I love this - it was just what I needed to read today. I have a successful professional organizing business and have just (2 months ago) launched a shop on ETSY to sell printable instant downloads based on my 17 years of experience as an organizer. I have 10 products listed, get lots of views each day but so far, no buyers. I am going to keep tweaking my listings. I believe it's just a matter of time (and leading people to my shop!) Thanks for listening.
My next big leap: moving from small-town Tennessee to the southeast of England! Moving with my British hubby and six-year-old. I’ve never lived out of the country, but this is a long-time dream and we are making it happen.
