I gave up the donut

Oh, hi friends!
On Tuesday mornings, I always stop by the farmers’ market outside the Oculus and buy an apple cider donut for 75 cents. When I wake up on Tuesdays, I say to myself, “It’s donut day!!” That’s how integral this donut is to my life.
But yesterday I tried something new on my commute — I got off the train two stops early, at Bowling Green, then hopped on a CitiBike, and rode the greenway a mile and a half to the office, bypassing the Oculus and a lot of crowds. It was so nice and relaxing that I did it again on the way home.
So this morning I had a choice: Do I go my usual route and get my usual donut, or do I jump on a bike instead?
I thought about this decision for at least 10 minutes.
I settled on the bike.
But then something happened: When I emerged from this unfamiliar subway station, I saw…another farmers’ market.
With donuts. And muffins. (And fruit and vegetables, too, but who cares.)
They didn’t sell individual donuts, so I bought a whole wheat blueberry muffin instead.
With just one little switcheroo, I ended up with breakfast — and my new favorite bike ride.
So what can you do even slightly differently today?
You may not want to give up your donut, but there might be a muffin waiting for you instead.

I love you, New York.
From last night’s wee one-mile ride. Thats the Statue of Liberty in the distance!
Ask yourself: What does success look like for me this week?
Do you know? In my latest story for Shine, I dig into why this question is the one you need to ask yourself at the beginning of a new week. And fine, I’ll answer it myself: Success for me looks like entering the weekend with a solid draft of my 20-minute musical. Do you know your answer?
