Brass Ring is going to take a little nap

Oh, hi friends!
What does a break look like to you?
Slowing down, sipping cool drinks, smiling?
Wiggling into an airplane seat, walking a city, watching strangers?
Do you even know what a break looks like?
Sometimes I’m not so sure myself! But I’m going to find out.
We're taking off to Portugal for a few nights in Lisbon and a weeklong cycling adventure through the Algarve (!!!).
I plan on eating lots of sardines and biking lots of miles and smiling at one person in particular. That, to me, sounds like a perfect break. So does taking a step back from all the things — editing, freelancing, musical writing, Brass Ring writing. (I don’t think I’ve skipped more than a day or two in the past 629 issues?!)
My brain has been, um, busy for the last little while. Yours probably has been, too.
My fingers have been tapping on some kind of keyboard for hours and hours and hours every day for months. Yours probably have been, too.
My calendar has been full. No way…yours too?!
Maybe you have a three-day weekend right now, or maybe you can only snatch an extra hour of alone time at some point this week, but I wonder…what will happen if you give yourself a break?
Just...a break.
I was considering pre-writing a week’s worth of newsletters to publish while I’m away, but something about that didn’t feel right! These are always a reflection of something I’m thinking about or considering or overheard or discussing with friends, and I don’t know what next week has in store yet.
But if you need a little encouragement at some point this week, just remember: You can step away at any point, for any reason, and take a minute or two for yourself. I won’t tell a soul.
And I’ll see you back here on Monday, September 9, full of sardines, and ready to conquer fall with y’all.
Be ready.

Wait, *this* is the Algarve?! Eeeeeee!

OK, fine, I LOVE THIS KID. 12-year-old Luke Islam singing “You Will Be Found” at America’s Got Talent. You know why I like him? Guy’s got heart — and you can tell this is literally his favorite thing in the world to do. People can see you when you show off what you love!

There are so many ways to get cheap theater tickets if you do a little digging.
I really enjoyed this podcast interview with Amy Sherman-Palladino (creator of Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Gilmore Girls) (h/t Lauren Goldstein). For my second-year project in the BMI Workshop, we have to adapt an existing property into a musical, and my composer Ron and I chose…Mrs. Maisel!
Maisel...as a musical!
So I’m immersing myself in the ‘50s and comedy and Amy’s signature fast-talking dialogue. Ohhh, it's gonna be a fun one!!!
