What is talent, anyway?

Oh, hi friends!
What if ‘talent’ isn’t real?
And what if it’s not something you can measure?
How would you feel?
What if I told you that you are not talented?
That’s right. You have no talent, no gift, no inner spark that lights a path.
Instead, what you have is a work ethic.
You work hard.
That’s it.
The results might look like they came from talent, but that’s sneaky.
Because talent sounds like something you are born with — or not.
And ‘talent’ is the thing you think you see in other people, successful people. That they were born with a something that can’t be achieved. ‘Oh, you’re so talented.’
Nah. They work hard, too. That’s how they have the things they have.
What an idea to consider.
What if talent isn’t real?
And what if hard work is?

Reflect.

Really enjoyed this three-minute interview with Shonda Rhimes about her influences and the next generation of showrunners.
“I always knew as a kid that I was a writer, but I never really knew what I wanted to do. I always believed that wasn’t a real job, so I thought that all the things that interested me — like maybe I’d be a doctor, maybe I’d be a lawyer, or maybe I’d go work in Washington — I always thought that those were the things that I actually wanted to do for a living, instead of understanding that those were the things I wanted to be research and write about for a living.”
