Decision fatigue
Oh, hi friends!
So I just got off the phone with a friend who’s buying a new couch for her office. (Hi, friend!!) This is one of those decisions that can consume your whole life. I went through this when we moved. The amount of time I spent thinking about...
Is it comfortable enough?
Is it the right size?
Does it match the rest of the room?
Is there a better version on sale halfway across town — or buried in one of the 100 open tabs in my browser?
It’s exhausting!
But this happens all the time, in situations that aren’t just about couches.
You are stuck at the buffet when you really just need a prix fixe menu and to get on with it.
So when it seems like there are endless options, remember putting some constraints on the decision helps, too.
I’ll only consider options that can be delivered by October 1.
I’ll share four choices with a friend and let them decide.
I’m only going to commit one hour to researching this story idea.
I’ll make the event happen on this day, and then see who can make it.
You set the terms.
Also, once the couch actually arrives — or once your project is off the ground — trust that you are not going to look back and remember all those other options.
You’ll already have moved on.
