How to find a new job
Oh, hi friends!
Something I’m relearning for the 41st time:
The best opportunities don’t float around in space.
The best opportunities are always tied to people.
When we’re looking for new opportunities (jobs, projects, gigs, deals), what we actually need to find are new people.
New people can be found by:
- asking for help
- talking about what you do
- talking about what you want to do
- sharing what you already know
- being ready and prepared
- offering help to someone else
And there it is! The thing I’ve relearned now for the 42nd time.
“I would love for this little prize to be a token for every person who is wondering, ‘Should I be trying to make something that could work on Broadway or that could win me a Tony Award, or should I be making the weird art that is haunting me, that frightens me, that I don’t know how to make, that I don’t know if anyone in the whole world will understand?’” O’Connell said. “Please let me, standing here, be a little sign to you from the universe to make the weird art.”
Okay okay okay, Deirdre O'Connell's Tony acceptance speech is weeks old by now, but that doesn’t mean it’s not still accurate!
Make the weird [whatever special thing it is that only you make].
The Owl Is Everywhere
Sometimes I think my phone is the most boring technologically advanced tool on earth. My thumbs take me to the same three websites, I scroll the same four apps, and usually my engagement feels very…passive?
But about a month ago, inspired by hearing Colin’s phone emit “dings” every few seconds, I downloaded the language learning app Duolingo to try and learn some basic Italian phrases and…it’s so fun?!
Outside classrooms and workshops it’s hard to observe when you’re improving at a skill, but this allows you to try, try again, and get a little better each day.
Plus it’s nice to have a positive distraction on my phone. (And it’s free —as long you watch some ads for a weird animated king-and-jewels game.)
I know many people have been using this app for many years and I’m late to the game, but if you’re looking for a new skill — and for a positive feedback loop — this is your nudge to try!
(Also wow I love when I love something and everything I write sounds like ad copy look at me a 2020s Peggy Olson over here.)
