Your friendly Monday missive mantra mission statement

Oh, hi friends!
Have patience.
Have patience.
Have patience.
Beating yourself up for being here when you want to be there won’t get you anywhere.
Patience.
*deep breath*
Patience.
“One of the most important lessons I learned through the success of Wild is that if you take that risk, if you take that chance, if you tell the truest, hardest, deepest story that you have within you, you’re not going to step into the light and find that you’re there alone. You’re going to be surrounded by people who are there with you. Saying, Me too. When you take that risk, essentially you’re risking vulnerability. You’re risking showing your truest nature.”
Of course, this is from the great Cheryl Strayed, borrowed from The Path Made Clear.
Returning to this often as a few projects come to fruition.
You can make something or you can make Something.
The difference is what you risk.

When I became a freelance editor, I began to swoop in for a few days or couple weeks at a magazine office, top-edit some already-assigned features or lists, and swoop out. (You could say I was like...a falcon!)
I was still thawing out from my last job, and wasn’t feeling up for making new friends, or grabbing drinks after midnight closes. I kinda wanted to do my job and go home.
But one day while working at Billboard magazine, I finally struck up a conversation with the freelance art director sitting next to me. He was so calm. He brought beautifully composed lunches to work. He left at a reasonable hour. He seemed to have it all figured out.
And that’s how I became friends with the multi-talented, kind, and perceptive Heath Brockwell. And now, as befits a man with so many talents, he’s created a beautiful new project, and it’s one I think you’ll like. The New Maturity is a digital journal about being kind to yourself.
Yes.
That’s right.
It’s exactly what I want, too!!!
Check out his clever and easily digestible tips on how to live better, including how to make a plan with a friend and maintain focus in a busy office.

People like Heath who so generously share their experience in the world—not in a prescriptive way, but in an effort to inspire others—are the people I admire the most. Let’s all embrace a new maturity…together! (Also, another lesson learned: It’s almost always better to have a friend or two at work. Your jobs might not last, but your relationships will.)
