Number twelve
Oh, hi friends!
Let’s say you are looking for a new job. Or a freelance project. Or an agent.
One way to approach Searching for these things would be to assume that there is a single definitive answer. Scroll LinkedIn enough and the “perfect” job will rise to the top. Wish hard enough and maybe you’ll manifest the “right” people into your life.
But there’s another way to approach Searching.
Numbers.
That is, the accumulation of a number of attempts.
If someone told you that you would get the 12th job you applied for, wouldn’t that make you feel confident? Probably a little annoyed, because who wants to write twelve cover letters. But you’d know it was worth it, because the “right” job was waiting for you.
But if I didn’t tell you that twelve was the magic number, and you stopped at the 11th application…
Wouldn’t that be a shame?
I wish I could tell you which one will hit—that the second novel you are writing is the one that’s going to sell, or the pitch that’s lingering in your Drafts folder will turn into a cover story, or the third agent you cold-email will respond to you and change your life.
But I don’t know that for sure. And neither does anyone else.
So that’s why we must fix ourselves to that blind faith that it will happen, eventually.
Remember: More attempts, more possibilities.
Add them up.
Lucky number twelve could be right around the corner.
"That is a mark of a champion, finishing what you started."
I couldn't think of a motivational quote to include here, then looked to my right and saw this, written in a letter from my Grandpa Cotti. It sits on my desk and watches over me while I type all my little words. He reminds me to finish what I started. <3
