Doing the hard thing

Oh, hi friends!
Did you update your website yet?
Hahaha. Me neither.
Yesterday I wrote about having that task on my to-do list for years. It stoked a lot of conversation — and helpful tips — which, upon thinking about it, can be applied to all sorts of long-term nagging tasks.
Moving toward something
I lightbulbed when Laura said the thing to ask yourself before you redo your website is, what do you want to do more of, and what do you want to do less of? THAT’S A V GOOD POINT. Why showcase things you want to move away from? Why show off your crocheted hats if you haven’t looked at your crochet hooks in years?! Go toward what's next.
One fell swoop — and a little bribe
Betsy also wanted to update her site for years. Finally, she picked a weekend during which she had nothing planned (months in advance) and did the whole thing in a marathon sprint at local coffee shops, telling herself she could buy whatever those days as a treat for doing the work. (I’m talking pastries, not, like, binging on Net a Porter.)
How can you move toward your big task? And/or bribe yourself?

Funny how one photo can bring up so much nostalgia. That might be a good exercise — pick a photo and write a story (narrative, scene, monologue, etc.) inspired by it.

“A lot of people have tremendous fear about What if it’s not good? or What if I realize I’m not talented? But knowing what you don’t want to do—what you’re bad at—is just as important. That’s a door you can close in the journey of your life. And I think closing doors is just as important as opening them.”

Btw, did you read all the raves for Suzan-Lori Parks’ new play "White Noise" (with Daveed Diggs) and were bummed it was sold out? My friend Josh has two tickets he can’t use—April 19 at 7pm at the Public Theater. Row C!! Asking face value, $166 for both. Let me know if you’re interested and I’ll connect you to him. (It’s very, very good!!!)
