A is for authentic
Oh, hi friends!
Make it sound like you.
The pitch deck, the email, the proposal, the project, the play, the song.
Imitate to get something off the ground if you need to, but then make it sound like you.
What makes this come from you?
“Keep your curiosity front and center in your work and in your life. If you're curious about something, investigate and discover it. If you want to make something, make it. If you make work that really speaks to who you are in your heart, there's a very strong likelihood that just because of your deep investigation and fascination, other people might be fascinated too.
If you put work out there to gain an audience, if you put work out there that is strictly to encourage people to like it or follow it, then it might not resonate as much because the general spirit if it isn't really pure."
I can relate to this sentiment shared by Debbie Millman of Why Design Matters (she has a new book out now!) in conversation with Dorie Clark. I can't be the only one who senses when something feels a little off, a little like it's created for the algorithm?
Musical Theater TikTok Is the Best TikTok
I’ve had the song “Breathe” from In the Heights stuck in my head for days (it’s the perfect number to belt at 3pm to offset your caffeine crash, btw). And I realized it’s because I watched my friend Alex Parrish teach a one-minute lesson on TikTok diving into the song's lyrics and sharing vocal techniques. (He is an excellent vocal coach and music director.) Such a great use of TikTok and a reminder to share your knowledge, share it often.
