Aaaand, we’re back! Let's go.

Oh, hi friends!
When's the last time you felt nervous? Before a big race? A reading of your work? A debut of some kind? A job interview? A long-awaited date? Your wedding day? Your performance of “Shallow” on the Oscars in front of a hundred million people? Last week? Last year? This morning? Right now?
They say—who are they, anyway?—that if you’re not nervous, you’re not hopping far enough out of your comfort zone.
That’s probably true.
That also means nerves are a good thing. They’re a North Star.

Mondays can feel like this. That's OK! Pick one stair and go up.

“Mainly I learned something about courage. I learned Lenny was never afraid to make big mistakes. He was never afraid to fall off the top rung of the ladder and I learned by implication that the worst thing you can do is fall off a low rung.
If you're going to make a mistake, make a huge one.”
Nice little throwback interview with Stephen Sondheim from 2013. I saw the revival of his musical Merrily We Roll Along on Friday night and loved it. Highly recommend. Btw, Roundabout has $25 tickets for theatergoers under the age of 35! Here's more details about Hiptix.

If you were reading this newsletter a year and a half ago, wow thank you!!!—and also you might remember I was obsessed with advertising? After I got into the D5in10 Academy at the buzzy agency Droga5 I spent 10 weeks learning about the industry and building a creative copywriting portfolio.
The folks at Droga launched this free workshop to expand the pool of people who could get their feet in the industry (postgrad advertising schools are v expensive!). I didn't end up pursuing copywriting gigs (for a few reasons) but the experience was invaluable. I made lasting friendships (hi Tory, hi Erika, hi Lindsay!!) and learned so much about idea generation, collaboration, and how to market my own work. It's why I'm such a monster about poster design.
Now Droga is taking applications for their second year! Their call: You’re here because you’re an artist, writer, filmmaker, sculptor, poet, painter, photographer, fashion designer, musician or actor—a creator—seeking to step into the world of advertising. I recommend applying if advertising is a career path that is interesting to you—no matter your background. More details!
