Be like the bee
Oh, hi friends!
It’s Friday, and on this Friday, I want you to be like the beautiful and terrifying bee you will see in just a second.
I want you to buzz around. Fast. Move. MOVE YOUR LITTLE BEE BODY. GIT GOIN’.
And you’re going to work hard. That’s why they call them worker bees, right? They work hard.
And if someone tries to mess you up or knock you off your game, I give you full permission to sting them.
But do remember, bumble bees die after they lose their stinger. So if you do sting, sting carefully.
Alright, let's buzz off.
I'm sorry if this creeps you out! But I hope it makes my point.
"To this day I wake up early and I have to get to my desk to write almost immediately. I mean fast. Before the demons get me. I got to get writing. And once I’ve written almost anything, I’ll pretty much write all day, I don’t leave my desk, I have no other life. I’m not part of the world except when I go to see shows.”
Jerry Saltz is an extreme man. Maybe you don’t want—or need—to go to these extremes, but there are good takeaways in his Longform podcast. (h/t Angelica Frey)
He has a point: When you start the task, you almost always keep going.
Want to take a (free!) voice class?
My friend Alison highly recommends Sing a Secret, a mind-body voice class offered by her voice teacher Jonathan Stancato on a couple of Saturdays per month. The next one is this Saturday, Dec. 15 at 1pm at Judson Memorial Church just off of Washington Square Park! RSVP here.
And if you can’t make it this weekend or it’s sold out, start the New Year off with a bang and register for the Saturday, Jan. 19 class. (I very much like that he’s very welcoming to self-described “non-singers,” like, eek, me!)
