How to properly have a sick day (teach me?)
Oh, hi friends!
I don’t know how to relax. I am learning! Trying. Do you know how?
Yesterday I woke up with a cold-sniffles-thing, which apparently happens every year, right at this time, like clockwork.
But instead of delighting in my slothitude, I fretted and worried about not working—but didn’t do any work—and accidentally napped and watched 10 minutes of a This Is Us episode, even though six years ago, when I first started freelancing, one of my biggest and most unbreakable rules was: No TV during the day.
Anyway, at 6pm, I finally took a shower and decided to venture outside and, well, even just making the choice to move—simply deciding—has immediately turned my mood (if not my sniffles) around.
So maybe that’s the “lesson” for today. Make a choice, any choice. Pick a choice, and move.

“One way that I keep myself motivated as an artist is to think about my film career like it’s a pilgrimage. Who knows how long the journey is, what type of terrain is ahead, what kind of support I’ll get along the way, etc. With that analogy in mind, I decided it’s foolish to make this journey without giving myself the right support and mindset. I always joke to myself that I’m making this pilgrimage in an RV.
What that translates to in real life for me is making sure that I have a stable income, giving myself flexibility and as much time as possible to do my film work, taking care of my health body and soul; and connecting with friends and family who support me.”
I have met so many incredible and talented people this year. The director and screenwriter Mattie Johnson is one of them! She’s a gem. Read the rest of her insightful interview.
