You can break the spiral
Oh, hi friends!
When your mind worries about the unknown, what happens?
Spiral, spiral, spiral.
Every worst-case scenario and every nightmare comes to life.
But they’re not true. Remember?
Don’t give the unknown energy it doesn’t deserve.
You will deal with the known when it actually happens.
“And that’s why, in evaluating what you choose to take on, it’s important to ask yourself: in a year’s time, if I didn’t do this, how would I feel?”
This was one of the many gut-punch sentences I highlighted in my friend Dorie Clark’s excellent and eye-opening new book The Long Game: How to Be a Long-Term Thinker in a Short-Term World, which was released this Tuesday!
While I’m already one of those people who loves thinking about the future, Dorie brilliantly applies strategic thinking to actually making things happen. Aside from being an author, consultant, and keynote speaker, one of her big goals is getting her musical to Broadway in 2026 (we met in the BMI workshop!). After witnessing her ability to get things done, I’m 100 percent confident in a few years’ time I’ll be sitting in the audience for her show, just waiting for the orchestra to begin.
Please check out the book if you’re looking for help defining big goals, creating a workable plan, or need encouragement to think beyond the day-to-day right now. Oh, also! She also kindly interviewed me for the book, and I shared the story of how I created this newsletter, and the way it changed my creative and professional life.
It’s amazing to think last July we had a Zoom call to chat about her work-in-progress, and now here it is: an entire finished book. That’s the power of the long game. ;)
A Bit of Fun News!!!
We adopted a cat! Her name is Lula. She was a stray who wandered into a deli, and when we saw her at the city shelter, she was getting over a cold and a leg injury (there was a sign on her kennel that said LAME, poor thing), and her coat needed a good brushing and they had ear-tipped her (!) because they thought she was going back out on the the streets, but something told us…this is the one?! She’s so sweet, loves naps and attacking her green mouse, and is very interested in eating popcorn and human food (don’t worry, she’s not getting her way). I love her so much.
Seeing the cat and dog profiles on ACC and visiting them in the shelter opened my eyes to how many animals out there deserve a good home. Take a look at your local shelter, if you can, and you might fall in love, too.
