To all the things you will do
Oh, hi friends!
A funny thing happened this morning. As I began to think about a new project — which will be my main one, for the next month or so — I began to criticize myself for all the others I haven’t completed.
But what about that book proposal…
Those short stories…
That play idea you were so crazy about for two days…
Then there’s the pilot…the musical…the songs…
And on and on.
Where did those dreams go?
Of course, they’re still here.
We can hold competing interests in our heads, especially if we realize they’re not competing with each other. They’re shades of each other.
And, hopefully, the closer you get to finishing one, the closer you’ll get to understanding all of them.
Do the most you can with what's in front of you right now.
“Write the tale that scares you, that makes you feel uncertain, that isn’t comfortable. I dare you. In a world that entices us to browse the lives of others to help us better determine how we feel about ourselves, and to, in turn, feel the need to be constantly visible — for visibility, these days, seems to somehow equate to success — do not be afraid to disappear. From it, from us, for a while. And see what comes to you in the silence.”
Michaela Coel winning the Emmy Award last night for outstanding writing for a limited series for her show, I May Destroy You. (Her win also encouraged me to reread this illuminating profile from last year by E. Alex Jung. She wrote 191 drafts of the 12-episode series: “There is no writers’ room; she is her own fuel and engine.")
