Monday jackhammers
Oh, hi friends!
I sat down today determined to work. Would it be good work? I wasn’t sure. But being determined felt like a good start.
Then, instantly, jackhammers. Right outside the apartment next door. Can I call them jackhammers? They’re louder than any I’ve ever heard.
Yet while my new friends are tearing up the concrete outside, I can only laugh.
Because the door will always buzz.
The message will always need a response.
And there will always be jackhammers.
But you can still stay determined.
You can turn back and tune it out.
You can still try — today.
“My many weaknesses are beginning to show their heads. I simply must get this thing out of my system. I’m not a writer. I’ve been fooling myself and other people. I wish I were. This success will ruin me as sure as hell. It probably won’t last, and that will be all right. I’ll try to go on with work now. Just a stint every day does it. I keep forgetting.”
One of my favorite books is John Steinbeck’s Working Days. It’s the diary he kept while writing The Grapes of Wrath.
Just a stint every day does it.

New Newsletter for Your Eyeballs
I get most of my article recommendations from newsletters, and have been delighted by This Week Paul Likes, written by journalist Paul Kix (who I met through the newsletter you’re reading right now!). I really enjoy the pieces he highlights, but have also found a lot of value in his writing tips, which are framed for longform writers but often feel applicable to anyone working on a big project. Read some past issues and subscribe!

You can also support my work by checking out my motivational journal, Do It For Yourself, designed to guide you through your creative and work projects.
Thanks, as always, for reading.
