Do you know how to boil eggs
Oh, hi friends!
I wanted boiled eggs yesterday. I used to know exactly how many minutes to boil them for the perfect yolk, but couldn’t remember.
So I stuck them in a pot and started Googling.
“How many minutes for softboiled eggs”
“perfect soft-boiled eggs”
“Nora Ephron recipe for boiled eggs.” (She shared her four-minute egg recipe in Heartburn.)
I spent 10 minutes scrolling and reading various food blogs. The eggs? They sat in the pot.
There was too much Internet.
Sometimes that happens. You get information overload for something that requires very little data.
Because I didn’t need to make the world’s best soft-boiled eggs. I just needed to eat lunch.
(By the way, I turned up the heat, boiled them for a little while, let them sit for a little while, then ate them. They were good. They were fine. They were eggs!)
So I’m keeping that question in mind this week.
Does the task in front of me require the exhaust-all-options effort, or the they’re-just-eggs effort?
“Clarity about what matters provides clarity about what does not.”
Maybe not a surprise that I just speed-read Deep Work by Cal Newport for the third time! (And by speed-read, I mean I flipped through each page and stopped to read the sections I highlighted or wrote notes next to, which reminded me that even though writing in books isn’t my favorite thing to do, it does feel like a gift from your previous self when you can quickly zoom in on what struck a chord with you on an earlier read.)
