It’s OK not to have anything to talk about
Oh, hi friends!
Since I’ve been vaccinated, I’ve gone to a bridal shower, a birthday party, and had two friends over for brunch.
Like many people, I don’t really have anything super new to talk about. This has reminded me that what I usually cover in a catch-up session with friends is whatever musical or creative project I’m working on, because conversations often center around what is new or what is now or what might be giving us trouble or inspiration or both.
And yet now, when we have the opportunity to gather but perhaps not much to say, I’m confident: We will find things to talk about anyway. What we’re reading, what we’re watching, where we’re planning to go. Or maybe we'll revisit inside jokes that were paused for a year. Whatever happens, we will still have a good time.
You don’t have to prove you ‘made the most’ of the last year or that you made anything at all.
It doesn’t matter.
But it did get me thinking: What news would you be excited to share with someone? And what news would you be excited to hear from them?
Because you can talk about that, too.
The future.
“What is a small pleasure that brings me great joy? Can I enjoy it today?”
From James Clear’s newsletter.
One nice thing about small pleasures is they’re usually inexpensive and/or take very little time at all. Don’t forget about them!

This spot is usually reserved for a recommendation of a song or video or bird seen in Central Park. I don’t have one at the ready, so my non-cultural recommendation is cleaning or straightening up something that is bugging you today. Creating order from chaos! A Libra’s dream! No, but seriously, it might help clear your mind regarding your work, too.
