How to befriend the most boring thing on your to-do list
Oh, hi friends!
Better late than never.
And better today than Monday.
Looking at my list of things to do today, there’s one Thing in particular that I really don’t want to see again on Monday. (There are a few, but that one’s gotta go.)
So I’m going to throw all my tricks at it.
First, I’ll break it into hilariously tiny steps:
find Google Doc
copy and paste link
draft email
write down phone number
I told you these were tiny.
Then I’ll guess how long each step will take:
find Google Doc (1 min)
copy and paste link (3 mins)
draft email (12 mins)
By the end of this short and hilariously boring process it’s usually clear that the Thing won’t take long. Oh look, 20 minutes total? To get rid of the Thing living in my head and on that list for weeks? IT’S A DEAL.
And if it does take a long time, I can at least break the stasis and start one step.
Break it down, time it out, do it, and get it out of your brain.
“Negativity is the enemy of creativity.”
The David Lynch MasterClass on creativity and film is a quirky look inside his process — I love these deeper dives into someone’s mind. He calls finding ideas “catching fish” and was adamant that being in a negative space causes those fish to disperse, or never show up at all. This resonated with me — how about you?
Here are seven wild turkeys that greeted me on my run this morning! (One is hiding on the left in the bush.) Was hoping to get them involved in a relay race, but they weren’t interested. They reminded me to take it slow and steady today.
