When your banking app is your enemy
Oh, hi friends!
I just spent 40 minutes trying to deposit a check through my online banking app.
The data on the bottom of the check wasn’t clear, the app said. Could I please frame it correctly?
I tried a different background. Flash. No flash. Natural light. Squaring the corners. Turning the check upside down.
No. The app kept rejecting this check.
But each time it was rejected, the more I became convinced that I could make it work.
Maybe it’s because the sunk cost felt high: I’d spent 40 minutes on this! During the morning! When I should be writing!
Or maybe it’s because I felt like I could beat technology?
So I was faced with the two options that we always face every day.
Keep trying. Or stop trying.
(Or I could just walk to the bank and deposit it there, which I’m avoiding because I don’t want to relinquish this particular check, which is the first very small amount money I’ve made from a musical…!)
But if you hit a wall today, just think of me taking the same photo over and over again, hoping it will work.
And maybe it will.
You can keep trying. Or stop trying.
What will it be?
Oh yes, I like this.
Why Yes, I Loved Nomadland
Did you watch it yet? Not only did it make me want to pick up my very-old-at-this-point script with a 60-something woman in the lead, but it made me want to see Chloé Zhao’s other two films, too. Here’s an excellent piece positioning Nomadland in the current film climate by my friend Daniel Arkin, and I really loved this profile of Zhao, too.
