March manifesto
Oh, hi friends!
Welcome to March.
There’s an excellent chance you’ve already thought a lot about the last year while you were living it.
So I’m going to propose something wild: Try not to look backwards. You already know what’s there.
And yet doing the opposite and treating this as a clean slate feels wrong. “Clean” isn’t the right word. But there is the element of coming full circle and arriving back at a beginning.
Maybe that’s why I keep coming back to the image of a rehearsal room.
You’re the first person to arrive. You’re going to unstack the chairs and arrange them in a circle, half-circle, maybe just randomly. You’ll pull up the blinds. The windows are dirty, but the sun is shining.
You’ll think about who is going to show up next. You’ll wonder about the potential of the piece, the potential of you, the potential of everyone, together. You know it won’t be perfect on the first try or the fourteenth, but slowly, over time, you’ll find your footing.
That’s what this month feels like to me.
Something new is coming.
And you get to create it.
“Our brain encodes new experiences, but not familiar ones, into memory, and our retrospective judgment of time is based on how many new memories we create over a certain period. In other words, the more new memories we build on a weekend getaway, the longer that trip will seem in hindsight.”
Obsessed with this article about how time speeds up as we get older. One way to curtal that feeling, they say, is to continue to learn new skills and ideas. You might actually be able to slow down time!!
We saw a raccoon snoozing in a tree high in Central Park over the weekend. He was about eight times the size of this little guy.
Oh and he wanted me to remind you: Say no to something today. And say yes to something else. You already know the right answer for each. :)
