What it’s like to run a marathon
Oh, hi friends!
A bunch of my friends ran the New York City Marathon yesterday. Some for the first time. Some for the 14th. Some chased time goals. Some simply wanted to finish.
I know their feelings—I’ve run it twice. And years later, I can still feel what it’s like to cross the finish line. You are relieved and exhausted, but mostly, in awe of yourself and what you can do. And you remember this feeling—this awe—when faced with other, seemingly unbearable challenges. You think, well, I did that. I am capable.
You are transformed.
And so to anyone who ran, I say: Congratulations and hold on to this feeling!
And to anyone who dreams of running it (or any distance!) one day, I say: You can! You can, you can, you can.
I’m a sucker for a sunrise.
On asking for feedback:
“The question I always ask is not whether they like it. That’s pretty useless. What I ask is ‘When were you bored? When were you most excited?'”
Gosh, that's smart. From Mike Birbiglia’s tongue-in-cheek piece, “6 Tips to Getting Your Solo Play to Broadway,” which includes advice to share your work with your smartest friends—and to rewrite. Rewrite. Rewrite.
How to make your musical last forever: Drop remixes of the songs every month, forever. Sara Bareilles covers “Dear Theodosia” from Hamilton with “Theodosia Reprise.” Haunting!
