Close your browser and restart
Oh, hi friends!
My mom and dad turn off their desktop computer every night (at least, they used to—do you still?).
Meanwhile, I let my laptop run for weeks without a break.
Yes, I close its little silver case and let it half-sleep every night. But I rarely give it a hard reset.
And eventually, Google Chrome starts to lag. And my word processor (do people still use that term?) can’t keep up with my typing. Everything gets a little slower, a little more difficult.
Finally, when I have no other choice, I close all my windows and documents and restart the entire thing.
I can open all those tabs again, but I usually don’t. And I realize I don’t need eight Word docs open at once—after all, I can only work on thing at a time.
Everything runs more smoothly. My brain’s a little more clear.
Sometimes a quick restart is all you really need. You know?
Maybe give yourself one today.
I don’t know what this means exactly, but I’m obsessed with it?
Her dogged pursuit of success involved a formula she said she learned from assorted books, including the Bible. She knew what she wanted. She had faith that she could do it. And she took action, enrolling in acting classes, doing tons of comedy, going on endless failed auditions, and finally getting cast in TV shows (“Real Husbands of Hollywood”) and movies (“The Janky Promoters”). She still is pushing to claim new ground and stars in the 2019 mob drama “The Kitchen” with McCarthy and Elisabeth Moss.
“I executed a plan and I’m getting the results, like when you decide to bake a chicken,” she said. “My career is a delicious roasted chicken.”
From this fun New York Times profile.
After her “breakout” role in Girls Trip, Tiffany Haddish was considered an undiscovered gem, someone who burst onto the comedy scene out of nowhere. The truth is: She worked. Really hard. For a really long time. And I think that's why her success is so fun to watch. She’s enjoying that delicious roasted chicken! (Btw, if you haven't watched Tiffany tell her story about taking Will and Jada Pinkett Smith on a Groupon swamp tour, it's the most hilarious seven minutes you'll watch this week.)
It’s only crazy until you do it.
Do I watch basketball? Not really. But do I find inspiration from Nike ads, because I am easily manipulated (and don’t mind that at all)? Yes, yes I do.
PS — I am considering a few ideas when it comes to the future of this newsletter. And since you know it just as well as I do, I'd love to know what you think. Here are a couple thoughts:
1. Starting some sort of subscription-based account (i.e. Patreon or Substack), with the option for people to pay to support it, something like $5/month, while remaining free for everyone.
2. Gathering some of the best newsletters and topics from the last two years and creating a book to take with you wherever you go!
3. Working with sponsors on a weekly or monthly basis.
4. Adding a "classifieds" section for jobs or the like.
5. Something else I haven't considered yet!
What do you think of these ideas? If you like one, all, or none, or have other thoughts about what you might like to see from me and my brain, which you're pretty well-acquainted with by now, please hit "reply" and I would really welcome your own brain-thoughts! Thank you.
Do you like these daily emails? Please share with a friend!
Thanks, as always, for reading.
