If you don't know what to do next
Oh, hi friends!
Instead of habits or routines, I’m thinking about continuity.
This came to mind for a silly reason. After we watched Staged with Michael Sheen and David Tennant, we tried to find a new show. Oh wait, here’s another one with David Tennant! (The Escape Artist, three episodes, heavy but decent.) I liked him before, so I should like him again.
This is continuity of consuming.
This works for other forms of media, too. After finishing The Crown, I started reading The Diana Chronicles for a deep dive into Princess Diana’s life. (Shhh, don't tell anyone I'd never read it before.)
This makes you curious about that.
But continuity also makes consuming media more fun, more deliberate. You’re slowly building a little mountain of knowledge.
Can’t we apply this to creating, too?
The truth is, I’m having a hard time coming up with a new project. But now I’m wondering if a brand-new project is even the right goal.
What if I followed the rule of continuity? Pick something I already liked — possibly already created — and find its natural successor. (That queen stuff really dug in my brain, OK.)
So maybe that 10-minute play with a couple set on the moon could be the seed of something new. Maybe the Maisel musical makes me want to explore the ‘60s in a different genre — or comedians in a different decade. Maybe that monologue about magazines is actually the start of a novel. Maybe if I liked working with this person before, I should see what they’re up to now.
Continuity. Taking something you know you like and following the thread.
To me, that sounds a lot better — and less scary — than starting from scratch.
Me, one week into 2021. Hang tight, my friends. *Hugs*
