You know I say this every year
Oh, hi friends!
In December, I usually write about “clearing the decks” — also known as getting junk off your plate so you can start fresh in the new year.
I was thinking, is that relevant this year? Maybe we don’t have as many loose ends. Or maybe we’re too tired to fix them.
But actually, it feels more important than ever.
Because you deserve a new space. A clean desk. A clear mind.
What steps can you take to get there?
I’m trying to do one thing that’s been haunting me every day: work tasks, follow-ups, errands, house putters.
And with each little pressure gone, I feel lighter.
Leave them behind.
Clear those decks.
“Here’s the thing: When you can be truthful about emotional stuff, that is what people remember. That is what they like, and that’s what they come back and watch the movie over and over again for.”
That’s Nancy Meyers in this long, very interesting Q&A talking about the success of her movies (It’s Complicated, Something’s Gotta Give, The Holiday, you know the ones).
“Truthful about emotional stuff” is a good catch-all for what makes lot of stories sing...
What Was Your Tiny Win?
I loved Nisha Chittal’s question in a recent newsletter: “What were your tiny wins in 2020?” (Tiny is a helpful word!!) See the open thread of responses. One person “mastered cooking all four of the so-called pillars of Roman pasta,” another learned how to crochet, another kept up a gratitude journal — some days they just wrote “coffee,” but that counts! The whole thing made me smile and think of my own tiny wins. Oh and you should subscribe to Nina’s excellent newsletter!
