A lot can happen in 20 city blocks
Oh, hi friends!
I’m doing this mile-a-day streak until New Year’s and discovered something new.
There is an arc to every mile.
On Tuesday, I slept in and didn’t have time to run in the morning. That afternoon, I had to eat lunch, so the run got pushed back again. As my friend JoJo, who’s also doing the streak, said, “There was a lot of negotiation going on in my head.”
Then it rained.
Finally, at 8pm, I resolved to run south for 10 blocks, turn around, and back north for 10 blocks. (Twenty street blocks in New York equals exactly one mile!)
On the way south, the wind was at my back. This isn’t so bad, I thought. Why did it take me all day?
After I hit my marker and turned around, of course, the wind was blowing into me. It was around 36 degrees.
I should have expected this, I thought. I knew the wind was carrying me before. It couldn’t carry me forever.
But somehow, on the way back up, the blocks still passed faster than on the way down. I had just gone by them; I knew what to expect.
And that’s it, isn’t it?
Sometimes the wind is against you. And sometimes it’s with you.
And sometimes you simply need to turn the other way to appreciate what you’ve got.
“Make the small big, make the big small.”
This was a motto that Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino had on set (which she carried over from working on Roseanne). Examples of making the small big: “There were episodes about Lorelai dressing inappropriately to visit Rory’s snooty new prep school, and Rory getting a D on a test. ‘Gilmore’ studiously avoided what Sherman-Palladino refers to as ‘Who in the town killed Sookie?’ story lines.”
A good reminder for any project you might be working on — there can be plenty of drama in the “small” moments.
