Just between us
Oh, hi friends!
Just between us, are things feeling a little off? A little, shall we say, discombobulated?
I get it.
Right after you finish worrying about one thing, a new worry slides into its place.
So today, or at least for the next two hours when I truly need to get things done, I’m going to try selective listening.
This involves getting clear on what you have the mental energy to hear right now.
For instance, I don’t have the energy to deep dive into the Wayne County recertification drama — so I probably shouldn’t be reading a long Twitter thread about it, which only makes me angry.
I don’t have the space to click through all the newsletters sitting in my inbox, because I know if I do I’ll be anxious and thinking about the story I need to write.
I don’t even have space to listen the part of my brain which is pinging with important things like “holidays! accountant! texts! interview!”
If I’m going to selectively listen, the only thing I can hear right now is: What can I control in this moment?
And what is one good thing I can do right now?
YES.
They found a small, very photogenic saw-whet owl inside this year’s Rockefeller Christmas tree. (h/t Diana Middleton)
His name is Rockefeller.
May we move through today with the determination of this tiny owl who traveled hundreds of miles while clinging to branches because he just wanted to make it to the big city!! Keep going!
What It Looks Like to Edit Your Own Work
I love love love this short video showing the edits Oscar Hammerstein II made to his song “My Favorite Things.” Shows you the power of changing just a few words.
