If you’re stuck in a bad loop
Oh, hi friends!
What do you hear on a loop every day?
I’m stressed. I’m behind. I’m scared. I’m lost.
I want…I need…I don’t have…
I didn’t do…I should do…why haven’t I done…
As Annie Dillard famously wrote, “How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.”
I’d also say, then, “How we loop our days is, of course, how we loop our lives.”
Is there anything you can do to break a loop today? Maybe start by stating the exact opposite of the loop you’re in.
Acknowledge it — then nudge it.
“It’s a mess but it’s an inspiring mess.”
From my newest piece for Forge, A Great To-Do List Should Be Impossible to Pull Off, in which I reveal the madness of how I actually work every day.
We Made a Thing!
I was very excited at the beginning of the year when “Letters From May,” the 10-minute musical I wrote with Kristoffer Bjarke, was accepted into the Sound Bites 7.0 Festival. We were going to have a production! In Manhattan! Better yet, two other lyricist-composer teams we knew from the BMI Workshop were also in the festival…which was scheduled for April 2020.
Whomp whomp.
But after months of planning, and with the help of wonderful actors and editors, we’ve all created digital versions of our musicals. Huzzah! I’m proud that we turned one of 2020’s disappointments into, well, art.
The festival is held over two nights: tonight (Nov. 13) and next Friday (Nov. 20). Tonight, my friends Caitlin Collins and Matt Lowy are premiering their gorgeous musical “These Walls.” You can reserve tickets — for free!!! — right here, and tune in tonight at 8pm ET.
Then next Friday at 8pm ET is a new line-up, including Steve Wallace and Kenny Harmon’s hilarious musical “Humpty’s Hatching Day” and our piece “Letters From May” about the life of a creator.
You can reserve free tickets at the same link right here. Get ‘em while they’re hot!
These are a long time coming. Thank you for your support. <3
