Your pre-Monday recharge
Oh, hi friends!
Well, it got me. All that back-to-school energy and then wham.
Suddenly, I remembered what going back to school is actually like.
Mounds of homework, figuring out the geometry of new friend groups, and willing yourself to get up for your first class of the day. (My patient mom used to bribe me with a glass of orange juice.)
So it’s OK if you’re already looking to recharge!
Here are a few avenues to help:
Do something you’ve never done. Colin and I went on a birding walk this weekend in Prospect Park. We saw 16 different species of warblers! (Fall migration!!) Meeting new people, waking up at a new hour, learning something new. It all counts.
Bite off a little bit. Sounds counterintuitive (why work more when you need to recharge, Kara) but moving a little project a tiny bit forward can give you a different, much-needed kind of energy.
Be grateful for what got you here. Actually, let’s swap out “grateful” this time because sometimes we hear a word so often it loses meaning. How about: Reflect on what’s going right. Amid all the changes (or stasis), or scary new tasks (or tedious old ones), there are likely a few things going right in your life. Reflect on that. Seek more of that.
And if all else fails and you still need to recharge, respond to this email and I’ll send you a quick note with my patented multi-exclamation points encouraging you to make the most of the week!!!
You can do it.
“[I would like to be remembered as] someone who used whatever talent she had to do her work to the very best of her ability, and to help repair tears in her society, to make things a little better through the use of whatever ability she has. To do something, as my colleague David Souter would say, outside myself, ‘Cause I’ve gotten much more satisfaction for the things that I’ve done for which I was not paid.”
