A trick for conquering little annoyances
Oh, hi friends!
Why do small inconveniences derail a day?
The big problems — those I understand.
But it’s the little annoyances that cause hiccups.
Why am I doing this? What’s the point? This shouldn’t be my problem.
Something like that was bugging me earlier, and right when I started to spiral, I thought: “But how much time will this actually take to resolve?”
The truth was…about 15 minutes.
FIFTEEN MINUTES?!
Something that can be fixed in 15 minutes isn’t worth derailing the entire day.
So if you feel yourself caught up by a nuisance today, try to estimate how long it’ll take to fix.
You might be surprised. A number can take you to the other side.
“The way to rock oneself back into writing is this. First gentle exercise in the air. Second the reading of good literature. It is a mistake to think that literature can be produced from the raw.”
Virginia Woolf said this, and I grabbed it from Gretchen Rubin’s oldie-but-goodie 13 tips for actually getting some writing done.
If You Need Help Focusing…
I know I’ve talked about Caveday before. They facilitate deep work sessions online! Basically, you log on, talk about what you need to get done, you get some light coaching and guidance, then everyone gets to work. This kind of pseudo-in-person accountability is so helpful to me. Shutting out all other distractions like, well, you’re in a cave.
My friend Jake Kahana over at Caveday has offered up a free 3-hour Cave to Brass Ring readers!! I hope if you use it, you find it valuable and move forward on your projects.
Just use the code BRASSRINGFREE when you book a 3-hour Cave at Caveday.org/schedule maybe I’ll see you there?
Has anyone started Do It For Yourself? If so, I'd love to hear your thoughts and which bits and parts and prompts might be resonating with you so I can share them widely.

Thanks, as always, for reading.
