When you call yourself an expert
Oh, hi friends!
When can you call yourself an expert? When do you earn that job title?
Do you first need social proof, a group of people telling you they trust your opinion?
Do you need the right education? Would an MFA or PhD make you feel more secure in your expertise?
Do you need years of experience or a contact list full of clients happy with your work?
The answers are fuzzy. Because maybe none of these things will make you feel comfortable proclaiming, “I’m an expert! Come to me!”
So then I wonder if waiting for someone else to call you one also isn’t the best use of time.
What to do instead?
You can make choices as if you’re already an expert.
You can say “yes” when someone asks if you can do the work.
You can do the work, learn as you go, and call yourself whatever you want.
It's Really Real
Guess what I got in the mail yesterday?! Do It For Yourself! *gasp* Here’s a sneak peek from the chapter "Overcoming Setbacks."
Voyeur for Competition
Borg vs. McEnroe came out in 2017 and I remember saying, “I should see that!” Well, I finally did! It’s a compelling story of Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe’s epic rivalry at Wimbledon in 1980. Maybe I just like stories of ambition and competition? Yes, that is correct. It’s on Hulu if you’re in the mood for a tense film about tennis!! (Shia is excellent!!)

You can also support my work by pre-ordering my motivational journal Do It For Yourself, coming out in the world on September 8.
Thanks, as always, for reading.
