A hopeful Monday
Oh, hi friends!
I’ve talked to many people in recent months who are moving, switching careers, applying for school, recording music, teaching online seminars, and spending time in writing and acting classes — all embarking on new chapters.
What I’ve seen is that change doesn’t happen in one day (or even six months). It doesn’t have a single cause.
But there is a universal guarded optimism in each of their stories.
Maybe their life isn’t the same as before.
Maybe it’ll take some time.
But maybe this, too, can be an important beginning.
“‘Feedback’ is really three different things, with different purposes: Appreciation — motivates and encourages. Coaching — helps increase knowledge, skill, capability, growth, or raises feelings in the relationship. Evaluation — tells you where you stand, aligns expectations, and informs decision making.
We need all three, but often talk at cross-purposes. Evaluation is the loudest and can drown out the other two. (And all coaching includes a bit of evaluation.) Be thoughtful about what you need and what you’re being offered, and get aligned.”
I love this clarity from the book Thanks For the Feedback. When you ask someone for “feedback” what are you truly after: appreciation, coaching, or evaluation? (h/t Sara Brumfield)
