There are no rules
Oh, hi friends!
Nobody knows anything.
William Goldman said that a few decades ago about trying to make it in Hollywood. Despite everyone trying to see the future, no executive or writer or producer actually knows what will be a hit, or what the future holds.
How true this is for pretty much every industry right now.
That can be frustrating.
How can anyone move forward if nobody knows anything?
Or it can be an opportunity.
You can move forward — in any direction you want — and try to take people with you.
My brother Eric and I often text a single line to each other out of the blue, and it’s this:
There are no rules.
This is our signal that you can post, create, learn, teach, adapt, share, and grow. Infinitely.
And why not? Especially if nobody knows anything, anyway.
“Never forget that writing is the one pursuit we don’t need anyone’s permission for.”
That’s from screenwriter and director David Koepp on The Moment with Brian Koppelman podcast.
Of course, he’s right, I said while listening and walking through Brooklyn Bridge Park on this 90-degree Monday. And the excellent interview reminded me: 1) I need to spend more of my days actually writing and 2) I miss podcasts! My routines changed a lot since March and I want to incorporate them back into my days.
You can listen to the full hourlong chat here.
Oh, Hi! I'm a Pika!
A pika is a small mountain-dwelling mammal found in Asia and North America. With short limbs, very round body, an even coat of fur, and no external tail, they resemble their close relative, the rabbit, but with short, rounded ears. (from Wikipedia)
Pikas been forced to adapt due to climate change: “In the more northern parts of the species’ range, where minimum temperatures in winter can be much more severe than maximum temperatures in summer, pikas assume a spherical posture that reduces their surface-area-to-volume ratio and minimizes heat loss much more frequently in the winter than in the summer.”
So when you’re curling up this winter into a “spherical posture,” you’re actually assuming a Pika Pose?!
