Killing your magazine piles
Oh, hi friends!
Do you have a Magazine Pile?
That’s what I was staring at yesterday after feeling uninspired by work and unsure what to do next: Dozens and dozens of shiny perfect untouched magazines.
Hoarding old magazines thinking you’ll get to them “eventually” isn’t a unique personality trait, but I think it’s acute for anyone who’s ever worked at a magazine. If you know the ins and outs of creating pages — the planning, edits, proofs — it feels cruel to toss them out with coffee grounds and used tissues.
But yesterday I shoved them all in recycling bags and threw them out.
Because if I haven’t read something from 2017 by now, was I really going to find time tomorrow?
Sometimes it’s good to admit when you’ve lost. (I did save a few favorites: New York’s annual Reasons Why I Love New York issues, a Hollywood Reporter tribute to Mike Nichols, an old Runner’s World with my byline, etc.)
And after they were sitting on the curb, I felt lighter. Work felt lighter, too.
What can you take to the garbage today?
Meet This Random Animal I Thought You Might Enjoy
“The maned wolf is the largest canid of South America. Its markings resemble those of foxes, but it is neither a fox nor a wolf.” May you conquer your Thursday with the confidence of this animal who might not fit in anywhere, but knows he has beauty and value — and great legs.
