Fire up your Monday
Oh, hi friends!
It’s Monday.
The best day of the week.
Go get it.
From @garyvee's Instagram.
I don’t hide the fact that I draw inspiration from motivational work-hard play-hard “dudes,” from Sondheim’s creative practices, from random street-corner graffiti, from conversations with strangers, from TED talks, from “woo-woo” spiritual practices, from day laborers and EGOT winners, from my California roots to my New York branches. It all adds up. It all works. Don’t be ashamed of who or what inspires you. In fact, you should share it with everyone else! Maybe they'll find inspiration, too.
Anyway.
Now go do things you’ve never done.
As Kara Cutruzzula remembers from those early months of The Daily Beast, “After working 16-hour days we would take black cars home after 10 p.m. The drivers would ask where I was coming from and when I said work they always thought I was crazy. They would tell me that I was young and that I should be out having fun. But I was having fun.”
(Yes, I’m quoting myself being quoted!!!)
I started my career as a culture intern at The Daily Beast 10 years ago, right after it launched. We worked incredibly hard—looking back, I’m not sure how I survived?!—but what I remember most is how much I learned, and how much my spongy little brain wanted to soak up every drop from the brilliant people surrounding me. They’re why I worked even harder. And yes, we had a good time, too! Our editor Tina Brown recounts those insane early days in her sweet, nostalgic piece that might make you long for the simpler days of 2008.
And here's another quote from Tina that you'll like: “The best thing about failure is that it frees you up to stop worrying if you’re going to fail. You did and you rose again. Let’s party."
What the world needs now.
You will enjoy this amazing cover by Kyle Riabko. (h/t Jacob Jarrett)
