Nope you're not gonna do that today
Oh, hi friends!
There’s the essential and the superfluous.
What can you say is absolutely, 100%, not-a-doubt-in-your-mind essential for you today?
Do that.
The rest will wait.
“A good snapshot keeps a moment from running away.”
― Eudora Welty
I found this quote, then realized I haven’t read much by Welty, so devoured this profile on the National Endowment for the Humanities, which has an especially nice ending:
“Welty had a ready answer for those who thought that a quiet life and a literary life were somehow incompatible. ‘As you have seen, I am a writer who came of a sheltered life,’ she told her readers. ‘A sheltered life can be a daring life as well. For all serious daring starts from within.’”
For a Killer Throwback
If you like television, media, period pieces, and talk of ethics and intellectualism, can I recommend the movie Quiz Show? It’s from 1994, directed by Robert Redford and starring Ralph Fiennes and John Turturro (among many others) and follows the 1950s scandal of rigged TV game shows. A wonderfully acted escape!
Here are the places where it’s streaming for rent. And after you watch, here’s a New Yorker piece written by the protagonist, Charles Van Doren, published decades after the drama. Juicy!
